The project, called Location Service, was originally a side project for Tristan, the creator of the Android native app called Geocoder. Though a private beta was first made available last week, Google is expected to bring it out to the public, possibly in the next month. "The idea is to have a service which could provide a guaranteed location, just like GPS," Tristan tells me. "The average GPS chip is accurate to within 50 meters, but there's no way of making the service really accurate. An advantage of this approach is that you don't even need a connection to have a location." Geocoder has a built-in location service that you can activate by tapping a little "G" button near the bottom of the app. The service uses the GPS in your phone or tablet to give you a location, even if your phone is dead or the battery is drained.
