The film is based on his earlier novel with the same name. The film stars Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Farah Khan and Udita Goswami in the lead roles and has been shot in locations in Europe, Israel, and India. The film is set against the backdrop of the 2007–2008 financial crisis and the Swine flu scare.

The film was first reported to be a flop, with a budget of, but Kabir Khan said it was not. The budget was eventually announced to be, much lower than expected. The film's working title was 'Guru', after its "secretive mentor". The name was changed to Chandni Chowk to China, after the Hindi title. Kabir Khan conceived the plot of Chandni Chowk to China while he was writing his novel. He said the book was inspired by his childhood years in Pakistan, when he lived in Chandni Chowk, where he used to meet his co-writer, Shashi Tharoor, "like two sticks being able to touch each other". The inspiration of the novel led to the concept of the film.

"I came up with the concept of Chandni Chowk to China in London as the story of the child born of a great father-son rivalry and I was writing from that concept", said Kabir Khan.
